Over the years Junos code size for MX platform has been consistently increasing due to the addition of new features as well as continuous feature enhancements. Although Junos for MX has been continuously optimized, there are more feature additions and enhancements expected in the upcoming years to ensure that the software remains aligned with the evolving market dynamics. Based on Junos code growth projections, it is estimated that RE-S-X6-64G, which ships with 50G SSD can run into disk space limitations while loading images beyond Junos version 23.4. 24.2

Verify that the Routing Engine you have has 200G SSD before upgrading to Junos 23.4 24.2, or later.

In order to support customers with the existing install base of RE-S-X6-64G to be able to upgrade beyond Junos Software version 23.4 24.2, we have established the provision to perform an In-field upgrade of REs to a greater capacity of 200G SSD.

The qualified and recommended 200G SSD by the SKU name 200G-SSD-UPG-KIT is available in the Juniper price list from September 1st, 2023 onward. Each 200G-SSD-UPG-KIT consists of 2 quantities of 200G SSD that have been qualified to work with RE-S-X6-64G-x routing engines.

Note that customers who wish to procure REs for any new deployments can avail of routing engine RE-S-X6-128G, which ships with higher disk capacity of 200G and 128G memory and has already been a part of Juniper product portfolio. 

Note 2: When a faulty RE-S-X6-64G is RMA, the replacement unit will come equipped with the 200G SSD pre-installed - irrespective of the SSD capacity of the unit being returned for replacement.
