This article outlines the maximum number of concurrent RPM (Realtime Performance Monitoring) probes supported by different versions of Junos OS.

  • High CPU and Memory Usage: Exceeding the supported number of RPM probes can strain the router's resources, leading to high CPU usage and increased memory consumption.


  • Probe Failures: When the number of concurrent RPM probes exceeds the supported limit, probes may fail to run or generate inaccurate results.


  • Degraded Performance: A router that is overloaded with too many RPM probes may exhibit reduced performance, affecting network stability and responsiveness.


Solution

The maximum number of concurrent RPM probes varies across different Junos OS versions and probe types:


  • Junos OS Release Older Than 17.3R1:


    • The maximum supported RPM probes is 500 for all probe types.


  • Junos OS Release 17.3R1 and Later:


    • For ICMP and ICMP-Timestamp probe types, the maximum is 2000 concurrent probes.
    • For UDP and TCP probe types, the limit is 500 concurrent probes.


  • Junos OS Release 17.3R1 and Later (with Delegate-Probes Implementation):


    • With the introduction of delegate-probes, the limit increases to 1 Million RPM probes per Service-NPU.
