Description

This KB details the steps for upgrading SSR hardware devices that ship with version 5.4.4.

Symptoms

  • SSR device may have shipped with firmware 5.4.4.
  • MIST firmware upgrade attempt fails with error:

"SSR firmware download failed: Failed to download supplementary packages for SSR upgrade for
    version 6.2.6-15.sts"

    Reason: "OC FWUPDATE DOWNLOADFAILED"

Solution

Option 1 - Upgrade from MIST

(as of Nov 2025)

SSR must already be activated in MIST, but showing "Firmware Upgrade Required"

  1. Click on Firmware Upgrade
  2. Identify the target version from the production channel, note the version
  3. Select Beta channel, and then select the same target version identified from Production channel

Note: (Nov 2025) Future upgrades of the device may require continued use of Beta channel. (Fix will be made in the future that will make this unnecessary)

Option 2 - USB re-image

  1. Download and create USB Stick with the desired target OS Version, use "image based" files
    1. Note: Image based iso is available for 6.2 also and is preferred for MIST managed devices.
    2. https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/session-smart-router/docs/intro_creating_bootable_usb
  2. Continue with the re-image steps
    1. https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/session-smart-router/docs/intro_installation_bootable_media
    2. If you are monitoring SSR console, Unit will boot to login prompt, then power off.
  3. After Poweroff remove usb and reboot the device
    1. For Juniper devices with claim code, the SSR will connect to MIST and should show UP for the site, Wait for config changes to apply to the device, this will take some time. Some configurations will require an additional reboot

USB re-image may also be needed for:

  • Initial upgrades may result in unexpected interface names or the absence of expected network interfaces.
  • Devices may prompt for Conductor IP on first-time power-up, which is unnecessary when connecting directly to MIST.
