How to resolve a conflict in the RETH MAC address that is assigned to different clusters in the same Layer2 environment

Symptoms

It is possible to have a MAC address conflict if more than one JSRP cluster exists on the same layer 2 environment. Therefore, if there is more than one J-Series or SRX JSRP cluster in your environment, proactively use a different cluster ID for each cluster to avoid conflicts.

Solution

In order to resolve the conflict in an existing cluster environment we need to delete the existing RETH MAC address, assign a new cluster ID, and reboot the cluster Nodes at the same time.
 
Steps:
 
1. Delete the existing MAC for respective RETH interfaces after comparing. 
  • delete interfaces reth2 mac 00:10:db:ff:XX:XX
2. Set a new chassis cluster ID for both the primary and secondary nodes, and then reboot both nodes simultaneously. If preempt is configured, both nodes will reassign their roles accordingly. If preempt is not configured, reboot the primary node a few seconds earlier than the secondary node. 
  • set chassis cluster cluster-id 10 reboot
3. After reboot check the RETH MAC once again and it should assign a different MAC calculated with the new cluster-ID
