Description

  • After upgrade of the device from 19.X to 21.2R3 ,and the device is down.
  • We see this Error on Console : “could not open user interface connection: management daemon not responding”

Symptoms

  • The device is not transitioning to operational mode .
  • We tried to initiate soft reboot the device but the issue remains same.

Solution

When the device was booting, we see the below logs from console:

creating initial configuration: ...

cd: /var/tmp: Not a directory

<output>

[edit routing-instances DO-VRF-INTERNAL protocols]

 'bgp'

  warning: requires 'bgp' license

[edit protocols]

 'mpls'

  warning: requires 'mpls' license

</output>

IPSec Key Management daemon: KMD_INTERNAL_ERROR: main: Error changing to directory /var/tmp/

mgd: error: configuration check-out failed

Warning: Failed to commit active configuration.

Warning: Trying to commit recovery mode configuration.

mgd: error: Unable to find the rescue configuration file: /config/rescue.conf

Warning: Commit failed, activating partial configuration.

Warning: Edit the router configuration to fix these errors.

  • the mgd process failed due to issues with committing the initial configuration. The error "IPSec Key Management daemon: KMD_INTERNAL_ERROR: main: Error changing to directory /var/tmp/" occurs because the IPSec daemon is unable to access or find the /var/tmp/ directory.
  • Since the primary configuration had issues and no rescue configuration was set, the device failed to start the mgd daemon, resulting in the device starting in amnesiac mode.
  • Also we had issues in access the console to remove the uncommitted configurations. Due to this reason, we had to perform a format install to restore the device from the issue state.
