This article explains the difference netween domestic and non-domestic images

This article is helpful when clarification of domestic and non-domestic image is required.

-Junos Domestic Image is the “standard” Junos Image with full feature set. This is the image that should be used by default everywhere. It has a word “domestic” in it, 

for example jinstall-14.2R1.9-domestic-signed.tgz.

-Junos Worldwide Image is “crypto free” version of Junos for several platforms. It’s similar to Domestic image with full feature set except that it doesn’t have

· Data plane encryption
· SSH daemon and its encryption library

-In the 1990’s, licenses were required for export of most encryption items outside US/Canada. Junos WW (crypto-free) version for M-series was offered by Juniper in order to enable license free export of software to most countries.

-Major revisions to encryption controls soon occurred in that enabled license-free export of Juniper products – even those onto which Junos “Domestic” (that is, fully encryption enabled).

• There remained a significant difference between export rules for systems loaded with Junos WW and those loaded with Junos Domestic:

• The latter still required export license when exported to “government end users” in most countries. (Gov’t end users for US, Canada, Japan, Australia, NZ, the EU member countries and a few others were exempted from this license requirement.)

-We don’t need Junos Worldwide Image any more. However, we still need Junos image with no data plane encryption (but strong control plane encryption) to sell into three countries – Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – also called Russian Trading Zone (RTZ). We will be creating a new Junos image with no data plane encryption to sell into RTZ. Currently no data plane encryption gives us the only available basis for asserting no license required for importation of M, MX, and T platforms into RTZ.

-The keyword “domestic” will be removed from the Occam based Junos Domestic images. The keyword “domestic” is confusing and doesn’t convey any additional value. This is a “standard” Full Encryption Junos image to be used everywhere worldwide (except RTZ).
