Description

When a faulty linecard is inserted into PTX10k chassis, it may bring whole router offline.
This can be seen when temperature sensor readings from such linecard return incorrect value, which triggers emergency power off.

Symptoms

  • PTX10k chassis is powered off after linecard is inserted.
  • In RE system journal you may see the following events prior to shutdown:
Apr 10 13:59:53 router-re0 hwdre[25937]: CoolingApp: request_chassis_shutdown Initiating Chassis Power down sequence !!
Apr 10 13:59:53 router-re0 hwdre[25937]: CoolingApp: request_chassis_shutdown Sending Power down command to all the PSMs !!

Solution

The faulty Linecard is providing incorrect temperature readings, causing the system to shut down due to values surpassing the fire temperature threshold. This causes the chassis shutdown in response to faulty readings instead of logging a corresponding message.

PTX10k can be recovered by turning off/on PSM switches after faulty linecard is removed.
