Description

Remote management using a modem connected to the console port.  This is the setting when using US Robotics 33.6 and 56 k modems.

Solution

On the US Robotics modem, DIP switch 1,4,8 must be on and the rest should be off. Additionally, use the null modem cable (or adapter) to connect between the modem and Netscreen console port.

Switch Factory Setting Function

  1.  OFF Data Terminal Ready (DTR) Override
    1. OFF Normal DTR operations: computer must provide DTR signal for modem to accept commands; dropping DTR terminates a call
    2. ON Modem ignores DTR (Override)
  2. OFF Verbal/Numeric Result Codes
    1. OFF Verbal (word) results
    2. ON Numeric results
  3. ON Result Code Display
    1. OFF Suppresses result codes
    2. ON Enables result codes
  4. OFF Command Mode Local Echo Suppression
    1. OFF Displays keyboard commands
    2. ON Suppressses echo
  5. ON Auto Answer Suppression
    1. OFF Modem answers on first ring, or higher if specified in NVRAM
    2. ON Disables auto answer
  6. OFF Carrier Detect (CD) Override
    1. OFF Modem sends CD signal when it connects with another modem, drops CD on dis-connnect
  7. OFF Power-on and ATZ Reset Software Defaults
    1. OFF Loads Y or Y1 configuration from user-defined nonvolatile memory (NVRAM)
    2. ON Loads & F0- Generic template from read only memory (ROM)
  8. ON AT Command Set Recognition
    1. OFF Disables command recognition (Dumb Mode)
    2. ON Enables recognition (Smart mode)

 Note:  This solution only applies to devices which contain a 9 pin modem port
