Description

Unforeseen errors may occur when using third party optics and most third party optics are not supported by Juniper, thus, the importance to use Juniper optics.

Symptoms

Important things to understand:

  • Juniper Networks doesn’t manufacture SFPs itself. When we say Juniper optics what we really mean is “Juniper qualified optics”.
  • A "Juniper qualified vendor" means that Juniper works with that manufacturer to guarantee/support that the optics work with the platforms they are intended to work on. As an example, Juniper certified optics will display Juniper Networks on them with the name of the manufacturer printed on the optic as well.
  • The qualification of optics also differs from platform to platform, optic type to optic type and optic manufacturer to optic manufacturer, thus, an optic that has been crafted for an EX3400 for example, is not necessarily suited for a QFX5100.
  • The same manufacturer might be producing the same optic type for different markets, and only a subset of these optics might be qualified by Juniper.
  • The Juniper qualified SFPs have "JNP" appended to their serial numbers.
  • Transceivers built for different vendors are considered third party optics for Juniper devices, even if that manufacturer is in the list of certified manufacturers by Juniper for that particular type of optic.
  • Some unscrupulous manufacturers will call their optics “Juniper optics” or “Juniper compatible optics” to lure customers. This does not necessarily mean the optics are qualified by Juniper.
  • The most conclusive way of determining whether a particular optic is designed for Juniper is to look at the optic physically, they will say “Juniper Networks” on them. Here two examples:

Solution

Remember that even if the transceiver is qualified by Juniper, it will be tailored specifically for a subset of platforms only, this is where the 'Hardware Compatibility Tool' comes into the picture. This tool lists optics that are intended for each platform:
