Description

On QFX5200, FAN LEDs start blinking Amber randomly

Symptoms

On a QFX5200 switch, the Fan LED starts blinking Amber randomly.
This issue can occur after an upgrade to the releases where the issue is not fixed. Monitor the FAN LED for some time, it will start blinking Amber for few seconds randomly and then turn back to green.

There have been changes w.r.t RPM values in recent code base.
In addition to that there are multiple changes in the way how the RPM values along with thresholds are calculated depending on external environment conditions as well. Depending on the temperature, the RPM values vary and results in this behavior.

Solution

This issue is cosmetic and should not cause any service impact. It is recommended to upgrade to one of the releases mentioned in the PR1738865.
If the issue does not resolve, please try troubleshooting as stated below to check if it is a genuine case of some hardware issues.
  1. Physically check if the fan is not spinning or it is a false alarm.
  2. Check by swapping the fan tray with a known good one to check if the issue is actually with the fan tray.
  3. If swapping the fan tray with a known good one still does not resolve the issue, then the fault can be with the fan slot/chassis.
  4. Power-cycle the switch, if not recovered it is fault with the switch
