Description

This KB explains the issue and fix, where POE FW upgrade does not get complete on ex4400 switches.
The POE update process is stuck at 95% affecting the POE functionality. Platforms affected majorly all EX series: EX4400-48MP, EX4400-24MP, EX4400-48P, EX4400-24P, EX4300-48MP, EX3400-48P, EX3400-24P, EX2300-48P, EX2300-24P, EX2300-C-12P.

Symptoms

Poe update process stuck at 95% looks like below:

Solution

This KB applies to software version BEFORE junos:21.4R3-S4 junos:22.2R3-S1 junos:22.3R2-S2 junos:22.4R2-S1 junos 22.4R3 junos:23.2R2 junos:23.4R1

Issue: PoE firmware upgrade gets stuck in an incompatible POE controller scenario leading to POE not working. 

Upgrading the POE firmware on the affected switches will cause a loss of PoE functionality.

When issuing the command “show poe controller” on the affected switch models, ignore the system message below, which may prompt you to upgrade PoE firmware.
 

**New PoE software upgrade available.

Use 'request system firmware upgrade poe fpc-slot <slot>'

This procedure will take around 10 minutes (recommended to be performed during maintenance)


Upgrading the PoE controller firmware will lead to a loss of PoE functionality. Rebooting the system will not recover the PoE function.

There is no known workaround yet to the problem. Please do not upgrade the PoE firmware unless directed to do so by JTAC.

Fix:
This issue was fixed under PR: https://prsearch.juniper.net/PR1744343.

Fix details include the PoE firmware upgrade process modification to address such issues:
 

1. Implementation Details:

* Code Changes for availability of the functionality and logic of poe FW version upgradability based on the controller parts in Junos.
 

2. Error case handling:

* POE FW upgrade handling if PoE FW version is corrupted

* Compatibility Check : Add the check: validating appropriate PoE controller FW version on PoE controller part number
