Description

Best practise guidelines to follow for temperature control and checks.

Exact operating environment temperature might differ from device-device.

Symptoms

High temperature scenarios.

Solution

Environment Monitoring:

  • Use an environment monitoring system or integrate the EX internal sensors with your Network Management System (NMS) to constantly monitor temperature levels.

Data Center/Room Environment:

  • Temperature: Maintain the operating environment between the recommended 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F) for standard airflow models.
  • Humidity: Aim for a relative humidity level of 10% to 90% non-condensing.
  • Ensure there’s no direct sunlight or other heat sources near the switch.

Cable Management:

  • Keep cables organised and prevent them from obstructing airflow. Using cable management tools or techniques can help in ensuring proper airflow.

Cooling System Maintenance:

  • Periodically inspect and clean the fans in the switch.
  • Check for fan failures or alerts. Replace faulty fans promptly.

Rack Considerations:

  • If the switch is in a rack, use blanking panels to fill any gaps in the rack. This ensures a consistent airflow in the rack and prevents the recirculation of hot air.
  • Consider using a hot/cold aisle containment system in larger data centers to segregate the cold air intakes from the hot air exhausts.

Monitoring & Alerts:

  • Configure temperature alerts to notify administrators if the temperature goes beyond the recommended thresholds.
  • Review logs regularly to ensure there aren’t consistent temperature warnings which could indicate an environmental or hardware issue.

External Cooling:

  • Ensure that the data center or room has proper air conditioning and ventilation systems in place.
  • Consider using raised floors and overhead ventilation in larger installations.
