This article provides guidance on how to locate the serial number of the routing engine control board on a Juniper Networks QFX10008 switch, whenever a customer request requires this piece of data to be involved or used for the task to be completed.
A request such as an RMA requires serial number of the routing engine of Juniper Networks QFX10008 to be provided to JTAC team and you are unable to locate the same on the routing engine unit nor on the chassis. The output from command "> show chassis hardware" indicates that the routing engine is built-in, although the hardware guide documents state that this platform can have one routing engine or a second routing engine can be added, and the backup RE is Field-Replaceable Units (FRU). Primary RCB is hot-pluggable while Backup RCB is hot-insertable and hot-removable.
Field-replaceable units (FRUs) are switch components that you can replace at your site. The switch uses
these types of FRUs:
• Hot-insertable and hot-removable: You can remove and replace these components without powering
o@ the switch or disrupting the switching function.
• Hot-pluggable: You can remove and replace these components without powering o@ the switch, but
the switching function is interrupted until you replace the component.
You may gather the serial number of the routing engine control board by running the command "> show chassis hardware" and you will notice that the routing engine row says it is built-in, although you should use the serial number that corresponds to the Control Board named as CB 0 or CB 1.

IF you are unable to see the serial number of CB 0 nor CB 1 and you still need to gather this information from somewhere, you may look at the hardware component. The serial number ID label for a Routing Control Board is located on the connector end of the unit. See Figure below:
