Description

Installing the NetScreen Remote Security Client on Windows XP With Firewall Enabled

Symptoms

Windows XP Operating System NetScreen Remote 8 Security Client Firewall feature on Windows XP

Solution

The Juniper Networks NetScreen-Remote Security Client software can be installed on the Windows XP Operating System with the firewall enabled, and still function properly. However, both the XP and Sygate firewalls would be running at the same time, which could create conflicts. The recommended configuration is to either disable the native firewall on Windows XP, or not install the Sygate Firewall.

If the Sygate firewall is not installed, the XP firewall will need to be configured to allow Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Authenticate and Go (ANG). The appropriate ports for those applications are: UDP port 500, ESP Protocol 50, TCP ports 1099, 42469, 11111, and 11112. These ports are already allowed by default when the Sygate Firewall component is installed.
