License failure is seen on QFX5k devices after upgrading to version 20.3R1 or later releases with the flex license model.

• When upgrading to 20.3R1 or later, the existing license key from the prior version fails to install.
• Error messages such as “license key format not valid for this product” and “License validation failed” appear.

You will need to obtain a new license key format compatible with the updated software version.

In release 20.3R1, the license system changed to the Juniper Agile Licensing. Because of this, the license key format has been changed from prior versions.  If you encounter an error message on your QFX, it’s likely due to the new license key format required by the updated software version.

In addition, both 20.3R1 and 20.4R1 utilize a specific license key format. Therefore, when upgrading from either of these versions, ensure you have the new license key to avoid any issues.

There are three types of license key formats:

1. LKG old License: Junos versions prior to 20.3R1.
2. Agile RMS License: 20.3R1 and 20.4R1
3. LKG new License: 20.3R2, 20.4R2, and later.

A new license key format is needed when upgrading to a version across 20.3R1 and later releases.

Upgrading from an LKG old license version to an LKG new license version also requires exchanging license key format.

How to obtain a new license key format with the updated software version? 

If you need a different license key format after upgrading your software to a later version of JUNOS for any of the products that allow Flex Licensing, you may need to trade in your non-Flex license key for a new version of Flex key.

1. To do the upgrade, click the “Upgrade” button in Juniper Agile Licensing Portal. 
 

2. Supply the needed information.

Note: This applies to both Perpetual and Subscription licenses.
