Description

This article provides information about the expected behavior with the number of interfaces that can be configured on T640 or M320 routers with a specific SONET PIC and FPC combination and the 'max-queues-per-interface' knob.

Symptoms

For a Juniper router, having a specific combination of the following SONET PICs and FPCs (Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 FPCs non-ES), the default queue number per interface supported is up to 8 different queues with the no 'max-queues-per-interface' knob configuration.

SONET PICs

4x OC-3 SONET or 4x STM-1 SDH
4x OC-3 SONET or 4x STM-1 SDH
4x OC-3 1x OC-12 SFP or 4x STM-1 1x STM-4 SFP
4x T3
4x E3

FPC (Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 FPCs non-ES)

Type 1: T640-FPC1-E2
Type 2: M320-FPC2-E2
Type 3: T640-FPC3-E2
 

When using a combination of the above PICs and FPCs and defaults, with no configuration for 'max-queues-per-interface' knob, only ports 0 and 2 are enabled:

Solution

This is the expected behavior for the Junos OS versions (and later) listed in PR1129778 , which is that the default queue number per interface supported is up to 8 different queues with the no 'max-queues-per-interface' knob configuration.

To get the ports 0-4 online with 4 queues per port, add the 'chassis fpc <> pic <> max-queues-per-interface 4' configuration:
