This article explains the output of executing the show system storage command in MX Series routers that run Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD 10 kernel (Junos OS 15.1 and later). It uses a question and answer (Q&A) format to walk through some of the common queries related to the storage system in Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD.
show system storage
The following outputs show significant difference between show system storage executed on a router that is running FreeBSD 6.1 (prior to 15.1) and that running the upgraded FreeBSD 10 (15.1 onwards).

Q1. Why do I not see CF and SSD after upgrade?
Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD 10 has two volumes: dev/gpt/junos and dev/gpt/oam . The /junos volume refers to SSD and the /oam volume refers to CF.
dev/gpt/junos
dev/gpt/oam
/junos
/oam
Q2. I can see the /junos volume in the output of show system storage but why can't I see /oam ?
labroot@PE1> show system storage | match "dev/gpt/junos|dev/gpt/oam" /dev/gpt/junos 21G 11G 8.0G 59% /.mount
In Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD 10, compact flash (CF) is not used to boot a device anymore. Only if SSD fails will the device boot from CF, that is, SSD and CF will not be used (or displayed in the output) simultaneously.
Q3. How can I see the /oam partition at any given time?
Details on the /oam and /junos partitions can be gathered at any given time from the shell by using the gpart command:
gpart
root@PE1:/var/home/labroot # gpart show -p => 34 62533229 ada0 GPT (30G) 34 6 - free - (3.0K) 40 56 ada0p1 freebsd-boot (28K) 96 16777209 ada0p3 freebsd-swap (8.0G) 16777305 7 - free - (3.5K) 16777312 45755937 ada0p2 freebsd-ufs (22G) 62533249 14 - free - (7.0K) => 34 7980269 ada1 GPT (3.8G) 34 6 - free - (3.0K) 40 56 ada1p1 freebsd-boot (28K) 96 7980193 ada1p2 freebsd-ufs (3.8G) 7980289 14 - free - (7.0K)
Observe the SSD, which is 30G and partitioned as:
The CF is 3.8G and partitioned as:
Note: To confirm whether the device is running FreeBSD or upgraded FreeBSD, the following output from the router shell can be examined:
lab@MX240-RE0> start shell % sysctl kern.osreldate kern.osreldate: 601000 <<< starts with 6; this is FreeBSD6 base (6.1) lab@MX240-RE0> start shell % sysctl kern.osreldate kern.osreldate: 1001510 <<< starts with 10; this is FreeBSD10 base or upgraded FreeBSD
