Description

Starting with Junos 12.1X46-D55, firmware v2.16.0 is available for SRX-MP-1VDSL-A to support VDSL vectoring. Vectoring on VDSL reduces crosstalk and increases network bandwidth.

Symptoms

A new version of SRX was installed, but not seeing updated firmware version for VDSL card:

root> show version
Model: srx110h2-vb
JUNOS Software Release [12.3X48-D40.5]
JUNOS Firmware Software Suite [12.1X46-D65.4] <<< Newer version that should have the v2.16.0

root> show system firmware
Part             Type           Tag Current   Available Status
                                    version   version
FPC 1
PIC 0          VDSLBCM        10  2.15.0              OK   <-- Wrong firmware version
Routing Engine 0 RE BIOS        0   2.8       2.8       OK
Routing Engine 0 RE BIOS Backup 1   2.5       2.8       OK
Routing Engine 0 RE FPGA        14  1.0.0               OK

Firmware v2.16.0 is needed in order to support G.993.5 VDSL Vectoring.

Solution

Even when running Junos versions with the firmware v2.16.0 installed, the SRX is not activating it because the ISDN VDSL (Annex B) card doesn’t support VDSL vectoring.

Hardware inventory:
Item             Version  Part number  Serial number     Description
Chassis                                                                SRX110H2-VB
.....
FPC 1                                                                  FPC
PIC 0                                                                Internal VDSL2/ADSL-ISDN <-- Not supported hardware for this feature.

Only POTS module has this feature support (VDSL2 Annex A). For ISDN (Annex-B), this was not implemented.

If VDSL vectoring is really needed to establish the connection with the service provider, then the SRX must be running Annex-A card.
