Description

ACX5000 can be upgraded using two different options. This article explains these options and recommends the best one.

Symptoms

ACX5000 can be upgraded by using two different options:

  • Option 1: Request system software add jinstall-acx5k-- reboot
  • Option 2: Request system software add jinstall-acx5k-- force-host reboot

When using Option 1, the upgrade will only apply to Junos. The Linux/Hypervisor host OS will NOT be upgraded, which will lead to the following scenario:

acx@ACX5048# run show version
fpc0:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hostname: acx5048
Model: acx5048
Junos: 15.1X54-D50.13
JUNOS Base OS boot [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Base OS Software Suite [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Online Documentation [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Crypto Software Suite [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Kernel Software Suite [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Packet Forwarding Engine Support (acx5k) [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Routing Software Suite [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Enterprise Software Suite [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS py-base-i386 [15.1X54-D50.13]
JUNOS Host Software [15.1X54-D20.7]
<<<--- Only Junos OS is upgraded. Linux/Hypervisor host software is not upgraded.

Juniper suggests using Option 2, also called Full Upgrade (upgrade both Junos and CENTOS software), which includes ‘force-host’ during the upgrade on ACX5000 platform. This avoids any unexpected behavior.

Solution

On ACX5000 Platforms, the software on Junos VMM OS plus Linux/Hypervisor OS (CENTOS 6.3) is different from the conventional M/MX/T-Series Junos packages. See Junos OS Release 15.1X54-D50 Release Notes (page 16).

During a software upgrade on ACX5000 platform, it is recommended to use the option ‘request system software add jinstall-acx5k-- force-host reboot’ . This option will complete a full software upgrade, including both Junos VM and the Linux/Hypervisor Host OS.
