This article provides a procedure to recover a lost or forgotten root password on the QFabric Director group.

Recovering root password for QFX3100.

If you forget the root password for the QFX3100, you can use this password recovery procedure to reset the root password.

Note: You need physical access to the QFX3100 to recover the root password. This is done by direct console access or through a console server to the console port on the QFX3100.

To recover the root password:

1. Power cycle one director device and interrupt its bootup process at the point shown below by pressing the down arrow.

• Highlight the OS image name and type e to edit.

• When the menu below is displayed, select the kernel boot image, type e to edit, and type single .
  
  Note: Ensure that a space is present before the word "single" at the resulting prompt to boot the device in single-user mode.
  
  

• After the single-user mode is selected, the previous menu will be redisplayed. Select the kernel boot image and enter b to boot.
  
  

• After the boot, the prompt should switch to "#". Change the root password and revert the system to its default run level (3).
  
  

• Log in as root using the newly defined password from Step 4. Initialize the setup script and change the Director group password.
  
  

• Log out and verify that you can log in using the newly defined Director group password.
