This article provides information regarding support of mDNS on AX series Wireless Access Points.

Symptoms

Most Access points do not support mDNS traffic. They do not pass mDNS traffic to the physical network. Are the same restrictions applied for SRX-controlled AX Series Wireless Access Points?

Multicast DNS (mDNS) provides the ability to perform DNS-like operations on the local link in the absence of any conventional unicast DNS server. Multicast DNS borrows heavily from the existing DNS protocol, using the existing DNS message structure, name syntax, and resource record types. Multicast DNS works by creating a device-unique identifier to register as a hostname via a multicast service on local networks. The client machine, looking for the given host's IP, sends a mDNS IP multicast query message to all the hosts sharing its local network. Then, the corresponding host replies with a multicast message announcing itself. With this reply, all machines in the subnet can update their mDNS cache with the given host's information.

mDNS uses the following parameters:

MAC Address : 01:00:5e:00:00:FB
IPv4 address : 224.0.0.251 or IPv6 address : FF02::FB
UDP port 5353

mDNS is used by services like Apple's Bonjour and GNU/Linux Avahi.

Regarding the capability of AX-411 to pass mDNS traffic, it will not care as it simply acts as a switch. If you connected the AX to an SRX in L2 mode and you have an mDNS server in the subnet then there should be no issues. Pay attention to station isolation being enabled/ disabled for the radio. If your client and server in case of mDNS reside on the same VAP, turn off the station isolation settings. Or you can choose to keep the clients and server on different VAP.
