Description

This article describes the Interface ge-0/0/7-9 behavior on the SRX1400 going down when connected to a switch.

Symptoms

The SRX1400 can come with 2 possible types of SYSIO cards.

SRX1K-SYSIO-GE:
6 10/100/1000 RJ45 + 4 1000Base-X SFP + 2 1000Base-X SFP shared as data or clustering control

SRX1K-SYSIO-XGE:
3 10GBase-X SFP plus + 6 10/100/1000 RJ45 + 1 1000Base-X SFP + 2 1000Base-X SFP shared as data or clustering control

There are 2 distinct issues:

1.  If the SYSIO card is SRX1K-SYSIO-GE
Interface ge-0/0/6 can be up but ge-0/0/7-9 is down. Configurations are the same. This can happen mainly when the ports are connected to other vendors equipment

2.  If the SYSIO card is SRX1K-SYSIO-XGE
Interfaces xe-0/0/7-9 support connections in both 10GE and 1GE modes. However when connecting the port to 1GE the link does not come up

Setup:
SRX1400-2 xe-0/0/7 === ge-0/0/0 ( EX )

> show interfaces extensive xe-0/0/7 | find autone
Autonegotiation information:
Negotiation status: Incomplete --- INCOMPLETE

Solution

  1. When using SRX1K-SYSIO-GE
    These ports are operating in forced 1G mode. There have been noticed many interoperability issues with other vendors/devices.
  2. When the SYSIO card is SRX1K-SYSIO-XGE
    The 10GE port on the SRX-1400 is hardcoded for 10GE and does not auto negotiate to 1GE when connected to a switch or any other 1GE SFP port.

  1. When using SRX1K-SYSIO-GE
    Auto negotiation is not supported on ge-0/0/7-9 of SRX1K-SYSIO-GE in early releases.
    These ports are operating in forced 1G mode if running a Junos version below 11.2R7/11.4R3. However in this forced 1G mode there are many interoperability issues with other vendors/devices.
    Beginning with Junos releases 11.2R7, 11.4R3, 12.1R1, CL37 Auto Negotiation has been enabled by default on ge-0/0/7-9. The other side of the connection should be set to auto negotiate as well.
  2. When using SRX1K-SYSIO-XGE
    To make xe-0/0/7-9 to negotaiate at 1GE mode with any other switch, the SRX1400 must be configure to auto negotiate instead of using the hardcoded duplex settings (of 10G). Auto negotiation is supported on these ports beginning with Junos releases 11.4R7, 12.1R5, 12.1X44-D20.
