This article provides a complete reference for the "snapshot" feature for the  EX-series Switch

Solution

The snapshot feature is supported from release 10.0


The purpose of the snapshot is to save a copy  of the current Junos software and configuration on an alternate device. If the device is booted from the internal flash , then snapshot will backup the internal flash to a specified alternate media (e.g. USB) .If booted from external device then snapshot will backup to internal flash

Example of the device that was booted through internal flash attempts to snapshot to same internal flash will throw the below error:

EX8200:

root> request system snapshot media internal re0 slice alternate

NOTE: Since the device was booted through internal flash we are seeing the above error message "cannot snapshot to current boot device"


External snapshot:
Procedure to take a snapshot from internal flash to external media (ie: USB drive)

EX8200:

root> request system snapshot media external partition re0

It copies the Juno’s and current config file to an external media (USB)

Commands:

r oot> request system snapshot media external partition re0
root> request system snapshot media external partition re1

Note: For the EX8200 the commands are always local to a particular RE. Therefore make sure to connect the USB drive to right RE. In case both RE’s are selected then the external USB drive should be on both RE’s
           For the EX4200 the snapshot command is local to a particular system therefore make sure to connect the USB drive to correct FPC. In case all members are selected then the external USB disk should be on all the VC members

For snapshot, it is required to have at least the same size external media as internal. Minimum external USB storage size on EX82xx is 2GB for EX4200 1G
