Description

An SRX administrator wants to send or trigger a single Syslog message from an SRX device to a remote Syslog server for testing and validation purposes.

This can be useful when verifying Syslog connectivity, validating message parsing on the Syslog server, or confirming that Syslog forwarding is working as expected.

Symptoms

The following conditions apply:

  • The Syslog server is located remotely from the SRX device.
  • Connectivity between the SRX and the Syslog server has been verified and is functioning correctly.
  • The administrator needs the SRX to send a single WARNING severity Syslog message to the remote Syslog server for testing.

Solution

There is no direct CLI command on the SRX platform to generate and send a standalone Syslog message to a remote Syslog server.

However, the following procedure can be used to achieve the same result by leveraging the local logger utility and configuring the SRX to forward matching Syslog messages to the remote Syslog server.

Step 1: Configure the Remote Syslog Server on the SRX

Configure the remote Syslog server to receive WARNING level messages and filter for a unique test tag.

set system syslog host <Syslog_Server_IP> any warning

set system syslog host <Syslog_Server_IP> match TEST-LOG

Step 2: Configure Security Logging Mode

set security log mode stream

Step 3: Generate a Test Syslog Message

Enter the shell and use the logger command to generate a WARNING-level Syslog message containing the configured match string.

SRX> start shell user root

SRX# logger -p WARNING "TEST-LOG: Manual test verification line"

The Syslog server should successfully capture and display the message generated:

The message severity is configured as WARNING.

The message contains the string TEST-LOG, which matches the configured filter.

The SRX forwards the matching Syslog entry to the configured remote Syslog server.
