Description

An EX2300 switch was reported as frequently flapping and appearing offline in Mist. The issue impacted trading operations. Investigation determined that the management VLAN and connectivity relied on uplink interface ge-0/0/23, which was experiencing intermittent link failures.

Symptoms

  • Switch frequently appeared offline in Mist UI.
  • Intermittent loss of connectivity impacting business operations.
  • Uplink interface ge-0/0/23 repeatedly flapped.
  • Management VLAN connectivity was lost when the uplink went down.
  • Routing associated with irb.5 became unavailable due to the failed uplink.
  • Interface ge-0/0/23 on the switch 1 was connected to interface ge-0/0/47 on switch 2.
  • Rebooting the switch did not resolve the issue

Solution

The following actions were performed:

  1. Verified the switch was showing as offline in Mist.
  2. Rebooted the switch.
  3. Identified that uplink interface ge-0/0/23 was down.
  4. Confirmed the uplink connected to core switch interface ge-0/0/47.
  5. Verified that the management VLAN (irb.5) depended on this uplink.
  6. Reseated the physical connection by unplugging and reconnecting the cable.

After reseating the cable, connectivity was restored and the switch became reachable again. However, interface ge-0/0/23 continued to show multiple flap events, indicating a potential hardware issue on the interface path.

Traffic was moved to the new interface and the environment was monitored for stability:

  • The replacement interface remained stable.
  • No additional flapping was reported after migrating from ge-0/0/23.
