Description

A customer needed to configure SNMP version 2 on an EX4400 switch managed by Juniper Mist so the switch could be monitored by an SNMP management system.

Symptoms

You may need this configuration when:

  • The EX4400 is not responding to SNMPv2 polling.
  • Your monitoring tool cannot read switch information.
  • SNMP traps are not being sent from the switch.
  • SNMP is not yet enabled in the Mist template, site, or device settings.

Solution

Enable SNMPv2 in Mist and add the required settings.

You can configure it in one of these places:

  • Organization level: Organization > Switch Templates
  • Site level: Site > Switch Configuration
  • Device level: Switches > Switch Name

Basic steps

1-- Open the EX4400 template, site, or switch settings in Mist.

2-- Go to the SNMP section and enable it.

3-- Select SNMP Version V2.

4-- Fill in the required fields:

  • General: system name, location, contact, description, and optional trap source address
  • Clients: add the SNMP manager IP address or client list
  • Trap Group: add the trap destination if traps are needed
  • Community: create the SNMP community string and assign access
  • Views: define MIB access if needed

5-- Save the configuration.

Important notes

  • If SNMP is configured at the site or device level while the switch is using a template, the override option must be enabled first.
  • If traps are needed, at least one trap group must be configured.
