On SRX1600 platforms, a DHCP-related core dump may be generated when interface ip‑0/0/0.1 flaps.

The issue has been observed running Junos OS 24.2R1‑S1.10.

Symptoms

On SRX1600 platforms running Junos OS 24.2R1‑S1.10, a DHCP-related core dump may be generated when the interface ip‑0/0/0.1 flaps.

In the reported case, the DHCP core dump was followed by a PFE crash; however, the two events were determined to be unrelated.

  • DHCP-related core file generated
  • Interface ip‑0/0/0.1 flaps prior to the event
  • DHCP process restarts automatically

Trigger Conditions:

This issue may be observed under the following conditions:

  • Device is SRX1600
  • Interface ip‑0/0/0.1 flaps
  • DHCP services are enabled

 

Solution

  • The DHCP core dump occurs due to a null pointer dereference during DHCP processing when an interface state change is encountered.
  • Under specific timing conditions during the interface flap, an internal reference is accessed before validation, leading to a DHCP process crash.
  • This issue is resolved in the following Junos OS releases:
    • 23.2R2‑S7
    • 23.4R2‑S8
    • 24.2R2‑S5
    • 24.4R2‑S4
    • 25.2R2‑S1
    • 25.4R1‑S2
    • 25.4R2
    • 26.2‑DCB
  • A fix has been identified to address the null pointer dereference condition.
  • Customers experiencing this issue are strongly recommended to upgrade to one of the above releases or later to prevent recurrence.
