Description

Migrating VRR from ESXi to KVM

Symptoms

We are migrating the VRR from ESXi to KVM and we have the following concerns.

1) Is there a migration tool?

2) If no migration tool is available, do we need to build new set up and restore the configuration?

3) What is the recommended release?

4) We have perpetual licensing; how do we transfer our licenses to the new device?

Solution

1) Is there a migration tool?

No, we do not have a migration tool.

2) If no migration tool is available, do we need to build new set up and restore the configuration?

Yes, you will need to back up the current configuration to deploy it in KVM.

3) What is the recommended release?

We do not typically recommend a software release. We usually leave that to the account team as they usually know the network, environment, scale, etc.

With the above being said, we know there are quite a few deployments on 21.4R3 and 23.4.

A good option would be 23.4 as it is the last supported code for VRR

4) We have perpetual licensing; how do we transfer our licenses to the new device?

For license transfer please use the below documentation.

Can I transfer a JUNOS license without an RMA?

New questions may appear so we will continue the KB accordingly.
