Description

This article explains the cause of repeated PFE out-of-memory error messages observed on QFX5220 platforms.

Symptoms

The following symptoms could be observed:

  • Repeated "Out of memory" errors generated by the PFE.
  • Continuous occurrence of the following syslog messages:
evo-pfemand: %USER-3-RAISE_OBJECT_ERROR: Object has error=Out of memory reported by app=rpdagent
  • Route installation failures or inability to program additional routes into hardware.

Solution

The out-of-memory error reported by the PFE was caused by route table exhaustion in the PFE, as the configured scale exceeded the platform’s supported limits.

On the QFX5220, the HW can support either approximately 380K IPv4 routes or 130K IPv6 routes.

When route utilization approaches or exceeds these limits, the PFE may be unable to allocate additional hardware resources, resulting in out-of-memory alarms similar to the following:

evo-pfemand: %USER-3-RAISE_OBJECT_ERROR: Object has error=Out of memory reported by app=rpdagent
