Description

Line card slots all the way in, but the locking knobs will not lock in.

Symptoms

While slotting new line cards on PTX10016, the technician is unable to lock in 2 of the cards. Tried 2 different cards on slots. The issue is believed to be with the physical slots themselves.

Solution

Confirmed the below with the technician to ensure the line cards are not having any issues:

Try with different line cards that completely slot in other slots and lock in completely without any issues.

Line cards are:

Electrically functional.

Physically intact.

So, not the root cause.

Backplane and slot connectors are:

Functioning enough for electrical contact.

Not reporting electrical failure or misalignment.

Chassis:

No chassis alarms and FPCs on slot x/y come online when inserted.

But the mechanical seating system is compromised in: (in this example)

Slot x: Partial lock (left/right latch only)

Slot y: No lock at all

 Conclusion: Chassis-Level Mechanical Fault:

This is a chassis-level hardware issue, specifically a mechanical misalignment or failure in the card guide or locking mechanism in slots x and y.

Asked the technician not to use x and y until they can completely lock in (not recommended to leave the line card online and bring it into production if not locked in).

Recommendation:

1) If possible, work with JTAC to get new receptacles with better tolerance. Once the receptacles are replaced, the line cards should lock in completely.

2) If (1) is not possible, then the only resolution is to RMA the chassis.
