Description

This article explains the cause of gaps observed in the traffic graph on SmartWall TDD SSP.

Symptoms

On the tenant view of the SmartWall TDD SSP, the traffic graph displays inaccurate or missing data when compared to internal monitoring tools. Specifically:

  • The traffic graph shows gaps or missing data points for certain time intervals.
  • Despite these gaps, inbound traffic remains steady at approximately 10–20 Mbps, as confirmed by internal monitoring systems.

This discrepancy suggests that the issue is related to how traffic data is being visualized or collected for the tenant dashboard.

Solution

This issue occurs due to data dilution. By default, the service portal can send up to 20,000 IPs. If the traffic data includes fewer IPs than this threshold, the detector may not receive packets associated with them, resulting in gaps on the traffic graph.

This behavior is expected, especially during peacetime traffic, where such gaps are common due to low or sparse traffic patterns.

Workaround:

  • Reduce the sampling rate to improve data granularity and reduce the chance of missing traffic data.
  • Upgrade to version 14, where the traffic feed is handled directly by the CMS, offering improved performance and more accurate graph representation.

Note: If the issue persists after applying these workarounds, consider reaching out to JTAC for further assistance.
