This article provides step-by-step guidance for identifying and resolving issues with a directly connected destination, SRX being the source of the communication

Symptoms

Unable to ping the next hop for the default route or any destination over direct route


Solution

1. Check interface status

  • Confirm the interface is in up/up state

show interfaces terse

show interfaces <interface-name> extensive

1.1 If down verify physical connectivity

  • Ensure all cables are securely connected and free of damage.
  • Check LED indicators on both ends of the link for activity.

2. Validate Interface Configuration

  • Ensure the interface is correctly configured with:
    • Proper zone assignment
    • Matching MTU settings
    • Correct speed and duplex settings
    • Accurate VLAN configuration (if applicable)

show configuration interfaces <interface-name

3. Inspect Firewall Filters

  • Check for any firewall filters applied to the interface that may be blocking traffic.
  • Also verify if any filters are applied to the lo0 interface that could be blocking host outbound traffic

4. Verify ARP Entries

  • Ensure ARP entries for the connected peer are present and correct

show arp

5. Check Routing Table

  • Ensure the correct routes are present and pointing to the direct Connect interface

show route <destination-IP>

6. Review Security Policies

  • Look for any security policies involving the junos-host zone that might be affecting traffic flow 

8. Check the Next Hop Device

  • If all SRX-side checks are clear and the issue persists, investigate the next hop device (e.g switch or host) for configuration or hardware issues.
