Problem

Multiple vulnerabilities in upstream OpenSSH used in Junos OS Evolved have been resolved by applying specific upstream fixes.

Important security issues resolved include:

CVE-2024-6387	8.1 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)	A security regression (CVE-2006-5051) was discovered in OpenSSH's server (sshd). There is a race condition which can lead sshd to handle some signals in an unsafe manner. An unauthenticated, remote attacker may be able to trigger it by failing to authenticate within a set time period.
CVE-2024-39894	7.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)	OpenSSH 9.5 through 9.7 before 9.8 sometimes allows timing attacks against echo-off password entry (e.g., for su and Sudo) because of an ObscureKeystrokeTiming logic error. Similarly, other timing attacks against keystroke entry could occur.

These issues affect Junos OS Evolved:

from 24.2-EVO before 24.2R1-S2-EVO, 24.2R2-EVO.

These issues do not affect Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved versions prior to 24.2-EVO.

Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of these vulnerabilities.

These issues were discovered by a third-party upstream provider.

Solution

The following software releases have been updated to resolve these issues:
Junos OS Evolved: 24.2R1-S2-EVO, 24.2R2-EVO, 24.4R1-EVO, and all subsequent releases.

This issue is being tracked as 1822901 which is visible on the Customer Support website.

Note: Juniper SIRT's policy is not to evaluate releases which are beyond End of Engineering (EOE) or End of Life (EOL).

Workaround

Use access lists or firewall filters to limit access to the device via SSH only from trusted hosts.
