Product Affected

These issues can affect any Junos router configured with BGP.
Medium
5.7 (AV:A/AC:M/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:C)

Problem

During internal conformance testing, two independent issues were found in BGP, both of which result in an rpd crash:
  1. Receipt of a crafted malformed non-transitive BGP PATH attribute
  2. An established session disconnecting before BGP could send the first keepalive message
The first issue caused the router to read past the end of an array. The second issue caused by an assert in the subsequent cleanup executed before the first keepalive could be sent.

Note that the first issue affects all routers configured for BGP, but is limited in scope to directly adjacent autonomous systems due to the PATH attribute being non-transitive. The second issue only affects routers configured with 'family route-target' and is limited in scope to explicitly configured peers.

Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of these vulnerabilities.

No other products or platforms are affected by these issues.

Solution

Both issues have been resolved in the releases listed below. Neither the malformed non-transitive path attribute, nor the unexpected BGP peer states will cause an rpd crash.

All JUNOS software releases built on or after 2011-04-29 have fixed this specific issue. Releases containing the fix specifically include: 9.3S18, 10.0S15, 10.2R4, 10.3R3, 10.4R1, and all subsequent releases (i.e. all releases built after 10.4R1).

The resolution of these issues is being tracked as PR 551330 and is visible on the Customer Support website.

KB16765 [juniper.net] - "In which releases are vulnerabilities fixed?" describes which release vulnerabilities are fixed as per our End of Engineering and End of Life support policies.

How to obtain fixed software:

Security vulnerabilities in Junos are fixed in the next available Maintenance Release of each supported Junos version. In some cases, a Maintenance Release is not planned to be available in an appropriate time-frame. For these cases, Service Releases are made available in order to be more timely. Security Advisory and Security Notices will indicate which Maintenance and Service Releases contain fixes for the issues described. Upon request to JTAC, customers will be provided download instructions for a Service Release. Although Juniper does not provide formal Release Note documentation for a Service Release, a list of "PRs fixed" can be provided on request.
