Problem

The version of the Java Run-Time library included in affected versions of NSM software contains a flaw that can allow unauthorized modification of the local filesystem and execution of local programs. The Java RT issue is documented externally in CVE-2008-0657.

Solution

The vulnerability has been fixed by upgrading the Java RT library in NSM software to an unaffected version, Java RT v1.6.0_14 or later. Fixed releases include 2009.1r1 and all subsequent releases.

This issue is being tracked as PR 428762. While this Problem Report may not be viewable by customers, it still can be used as a reference when discussing the issue with JTAC.

KB16765 [juniper.net] - "In which releases are vulnerabilities fixed?" describes the releases that receive fixes for vulnerabilities per our End of Engineering and End of Life support policies.

How to obtain fixed software:

NSM Maintenance Releases are available at http://support.juniper.net from the "Download Software" links. If a Maintenance Release is not adequate and access to NSM patches is needed, open a customer support case. A JTAC engineer will review your request and respond, ensuring that you will be provided with the most appropriate Patch Release for your specific situation.

Workaround

Permit network access to only those hosts necessary for management.

Severity Assessment

A determined adversary could exploit this vulnerability to read and modify local files and execute local commands, thus possibly compromising the entire system. Information for how Juniper Networks uses CVSS can be found at KB 16446 [juniper.net] "Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) and Juniper's Security Advisories."
