Problem
The debug.php file was inadvertently included in affected Junos releases. The presence of the file in the running system enables additional PHP debugging functions which may provide valuable hints to attackers attempting to compromise the vulnerable system. The vulnerability has been resolved by removing the debug.php file from the manifest so that it is not distributed in the fixed releases. It cannot be removed from a running system, and thus customers are encouraged to upgrade to fixed versions. Until an upgrade can be completed, the threat can be mitigated by strictly limiting network access to allow connections only from authorized hosts.
Solution
All JUNOS software releases built on or after 2009-07-02 have fixes for this specific issue. Releases containing the fix specifically include 8.1R4.2, 8.5S1, 9.0S1, 9.3R2, 9.4R3, 9.5R2.4, 9.6R4 and all subsequent releases (such as all 10.* and 11.* releases).
This issue is being tracked as PR 452877. If the PR is not viewable by customers, it still can be used as a reference when discussing the issue with JTAC.
KB16765
[juniper.net]
- "In which releases are vulnerabilities fixed?" describes in which release vulnerabilities are fixed as per our End of Engineering and End of Life support policies.
How to obtain fixed software:
Security vulnerabilities in Junos are fixed in the next available Maintenance Release of each supported Junos version. In some cases, a Maintenance Release is not planned to be available in an appropriate time-frame. For these cases, Service Releases are made available in order to be more timely. Security Advisory and Security Notices will indicate which Maintenance and Service Releases contain fixes for the issues described. Upon request to JTAC, customers will be provided download instructions for a Service Release. Although Juniper does not provide formal Release Note documentation for a Service Release, a list of "PRs fixed" can be provided on request.
Workaround
Strictly limit network access to only those hosts necessary for management.
Severity Assessment
The file enables additional debugging functions and output, and cannot be deleted from a running system. The resulting information and operations could be exploited to facilitate an attack on vulnerable systems. Information for how Juniper Networks uses CVSS can be found at
