Product Affected

This is a zero day issue which affects all JUNOS devices that support RSVP.

Problem

RPD has been found to terminate unexpectedly during security/resiliency testing using the Codenomicon test suite. The RPD core was caused by a specific RSVP packet and has never been seen in a production network. This issue requires RSVP to be configured on the target interface of the router and RSVP traceoptions to be enabled on the router. Interfaces which are not configured with RSVP will log the following message when receiving the errant RSVP data:

Apr 9 22:03:11.523108 RSVP error, disabled on fe-0/2/0.0, input pkt dropped

The RSVP packet can be sent from a remote device. It does not have to be sourced from an adjacent device.

Solution

All JUNOS software releases built on or after 2010-03-16 have resolved this issue. Releases containing this fix include: 8.5S6, 9.0S3, 9.1S8, 9.3R3, 9.4R2, 9.5R1, 9.6R4, 10.0R3, 10.1R2, and all subsequent releases.

This issue is being tracked as PR 421821. While this PR is not viewable by customers, it can be used as a reference when discussing the issue with JTAC.

How to obtain Service Releases:

Security vulnerabilities are fixed in the next available Maintenance Release of each supported JUNOS version. In some cases, a Maintenance Release is not planned to be available in an appropriate time-frame. For these cases, Service Releases are made available in order to be more timely. Security Advisory notices will indicate which Maintenance and/or Service Releases contain fixes for the issues described. Upon request to JTAC, customers will be provided download instructions for a Service Release. Although Juniper does not provide formal Release Note documentation for a Service Release, a list of "PRs fixed" can be provided on request.

Workaround

The following suggestions can be used to reduce the risk to the device:

Note that configuring the network for RSVP MD5 is ineffective at mitigating this vulnerability.

Severity Assessment
